Blogging in the LOTE classroom

There are a variety of ideas that I could easily implement into my Spanish III & IV classes. Here are four ideas that I plan to try this year:
  • Post assignments based on news articles and have students respond on their own Weblogs, creating a kind of portfolio of their work. Students can create their own blogs, find articles, complete the article assignments on their blogs, including their reaction, and paste the link of their blog into mine.
  • Provide online readings/articles for my students to read and react to. This is similar to the idea mentioned above, except students will respond to the given article instead of finding their own.
  • Invite student comments or posting on issues in order to give them a writing voice. My Spanish IV students can discuss and react to various issues we will cover this year including political unrest in Latin America and global warming.
  • Post prompts for writing. This could be an alternative method for practicing writing for the Regents Exam.

Lynne,
Your have mentioned some great ideas for using blogs in the classroom. You may find some others when you read the posts of the members of your group.
I'm so glad that you found Ed Tech Talk. I used to listen to the creators when they were just getting started, but don't have the time lately. They now host some great interviews and will teach people how to host their own shows.

Nicole,

I think it's great that you choose to include the use of news article or discussion about current issues such as global warming. As language teacher, I think it is important for us to expose our students to the 'background' of the target language they're learning. Politics, cultural or global issues definitely fall under that category.

Nicole,

I've always been that student in class who could go the whole school year without saying a word...I agree with you that using a blog in the classroom could definitely elicit a surprising amount of input from even the shyest of students. It's definitely easier, for me at least, to share my thoughts and opinions in writing. I wish any of my teachers had used blogs while I was in school!

I really like your blog and your ideas!

Developing student's voice is an interesting challenge. Being able to do this would be great that would give them an advantage and a head start into college and real life. Great ideas!!
